Program Adjustments for COVID-19

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is necessary for us to limit student, faculty, and staff physical presence on our Pittsburgh campus in order to promote public health and safety standards. With this in mind, we have made the difficult decision to limit or eliminate some in-person educational experiences for cross-registered and visiting/non-degree students for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Cross-Registered Students

As of August 1, 2020, the following practices have been implemented:

    • Carnegie Mellon University students registered for coursework at other colleges or universities are encouraged to attend courses on a remote-only basis when possible
    • University of Pittsburgh students enrolled in the joint-college program will be permitted to register only for CMU courses in their joint program, whether these courses are in-person (IPO, IPR, or IRR) or remote instruction (REO)
    • Degree-seeking students from other Pittsburgh Council on Higher Education (PCHE) institutions taking courses at Carnegie Mellon will be permitted to register for remote (REO) sections only
    • NROTC scholarship students from our partner institutions will be permitted to register only for CMU NROTC courses, whether in-person (IPO, IPR, or IRR) or remote instruction (REO); Navy imposed guidelines and restrictions will also need to be followed

Information about 2020-2021 hybrid instruction, including definitions and instructions for viewing course delivery modes in Student Information Online (SIO), is available at: www.cmu.edu/hub/hybrid.

We recognize that these adjustments present yet another unwelcome disruption to important academic and personal plans and may be disappointing to those who had hoped to study in-person at Carnegie Mellon this fall. We sincerely hope to return to regular operations sometime soon.

Visiting/Non-Degree Students

As of August 1, 2020, the following practices have been implemented:

  • Visiting/non-degree students will not be permitted to register for coursework if any degree-seeking students are already on the active waitlist
  • CMU faculty and staff will continue to be permitted to register for any CMU course, regardless of modality, following normal processes
  • Students from other colleges and universities may only register for remote instruction (REO) sections; these students will be registered for courses by the University Registrar’s Office
  • Consistent with current practices, minor students may register for remote instruction (REO) course sections in which instructors have proper clearances on file with the Child Protection Office (CPO); these students will be registered for courses by the University Registrar’s Office
