Undergraduate Student Account Adjustment Details

The university has received many inquiries regarding spring 2020 semester student account adjustments and refunds. Carnegie Mellon's leadership recognizes student and parent interest in these important determinations, and we thank you for your patience as multiple university departments and leadership from student government provided input for a carefully coordinated effort.

Our decisions, intended to treat students and families fairly and consistently, have been guided by the following tenets:

  • Students pay for services received and will benefit from student account adjustments on a pro-rata basis when and where services cannot be delivered.
  • Undergraduate students with financial aid will have their need-based institutional grants adjusted pro-rata in response to COVID-19 related student account adjustments; grant adjustments will be based on the percentage of institutional grant aid awarded relative to the student's total cost of attendance.

The Transportation Fee will be pro-rated at 50% for all Pittsburgh-campus students. Housing and dining charges will be pro-rated based on specific student circumstances. Further explanation and details about these adjustments, including a list of frequently asked questions, may be found on the Student Financial Services website at www.cmu.edu/sfs/coronavirus-adjustments.

Adjustments will appear on the March invoice that will be distributed April 1. Some students may receive a refund as a result of these adjustments; therefore, be sure that you have registered a bank account in Student Information Online (SIO) for electronic refunding. More information about refunds can be found at www.cmu.edu/sfs/billing/refunds.html.

COVID-19 has disrupted regular routines, planning and work for everyone, and we understand there may be financial hardships associated with those disruptions. We are doing all we can to minimize impact where possible, but we know there may still be some individual circumstances to address. We encourage students and families who may be experiencing a financial hardship to contact their liaison in The HUB.

Carnegie Mellon's top priority and focus during this rapidly evolving situation continues to be the health and safety of our community members and delivery of our educational mission. This is an extraordinary time and we appreciate your continued patience as we address the many unforeseen challenges and questions this situation has introduced.

Please continue to take care of yourself and each other, and stay up to date on the university's latest COVID-19 information by regularly visiting www.cmu.edu/alert/coronavirus.
