Student Account Adjustments in Response to COVID-19

The spring 2020 transportation fee will be adjusted for all undergraduate and graduate students located in Pittsburgh. Additionally, student account adjustments for spring 2020 will be made for students who have canceled or modified housing and dining plans. Adjustment details are below.

The transportation fee adjustment will be reflected on the March invoice (which will be distributed April 1) for all Pittsburgh campus undergraduate and graduate students. Housing and dining adjustments will be reflected on the March invoice for those who have communicated their canceled or modified plans.

If an adjustment results in a credit balance on a student's account, it will be directly deposited to the refund bank account designated by the student in Student Information Online (SIO). Due to the physical closure of The HUB and Enrollment Services, refund checks cannot be created and mailed at this time. For that reason, we urge you to register a bank account for refunding. When a refund is released, an email notification is sent to the student's CMU email address and the funds will typically be available in the student's bank account within two business days. Student account questions may be directed to The HUB at thehub@andrew.cmu.edu

Financial Hardship Related to COVID-19 Disruptions?

The university recognizes that COVID-19 has disrupted regular routines, planning and work for everyone, and we understand there may be financial hardships associated with those disruptions. We are doing all we can to minimize impact where possible, but know there may still be some individual circumstances to address. We encourage students and families who may be experiencing a financial hardship to contact their HUB liaison

Rationale

Technology services continue to be utilized by enrolled students. Students who have left Pittsburgh are unable to use these services. Although students remaining on campus will be able to access Port Authority Transportation services as long as they continue to operate with their ID Card, they may elect to avoid doing so for purposes of social distancing.   The media fee pays for the Collegiate Readership Program, which provides CMU students with online access to a variety of newspapers. Any unspent funds carry over to the next academic year. The activity fee is under the purview of Student Government and Student Senate. These funds were distributed directly to student organizations at the start of the year. Any unspent funds will carry over to the next academic year.

Financial Aid Adjustment

Rationale

The university encouraged any student who could finish the semester remotely to do so consistent with public health guidance (see message sent to students Thursday, March 12, from the Provost and Dean of Students). Many students have left Pittsburgh and are unable to use these services.
* Undergraduate students with financial aid will have their need-based institutional grants adjusted pro-rata in response to any of these COVID-19-related student account adjustments. These institutional grant adjustments will be based on the percentage of institutional grant aid awarded relative to the student's total cost of attendance. The cost of attendance is comprised of tuition, fees, room and board, and miscellaneous expenses for the year. Please see an example of how individual undergraduate student adjustments were made.
