Extending an Offer

Hiring supervisors should be prepared to negotiate salary using fair and consistent practices. These include the university's paygrade salary range, internal equity issues, possible precedent-setting practices and equal pay for equal work (taking note of any gender issues), and market conditions.

Hiring supervisors should also consider whether the compensation package is competitive, especially in fields where minorities are in high demand.

When making the offer, you should emphasize:

  • Support for employees to participate in professional organizations;
  • Explanation of benefit package for employees and their spouses and children;
  • Relocation services and reimbursement (if applicable).
