What do you love about teaching?

In my teaching, I really enjoy exchanging interpretation/analyses of texts whether literary works, film, or cultural phenomena with students whose perspectives are insightful and fresh.

How does what you do in the classroom reflect the impact on the world that your field has?

In my field—comparative literature, cultural studies and modern Japanese film and literature—, I was trained to take an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural approach. This approach has been constantly updated in response to the ever-changing complex world.

What are your current research interests?

My current research interests comprise 1) Historiography of modernity in the avant-gardist Japanese novelist in the 1920s to 1960s and 2) the intersection of poetry, visual arts and advertising in the 1980s Japan.

What one piece of advice would you give your students?

Modern/contemporary Japanese culture is a salient case of cultural intersection of East and West historically and geographically. I look forward to discussing with students various Japanese films and literary works to get to know more about our world.
