Switch to Cashless Payments

The HUB has permanently suspended all cash payments for tuition, fees and service-related charges, creating an environment of increased security and accuracy. Students may utilize a number of safe, easy-to-use payment options, including Flywire for international students and online banking for students with a U.S. checking or savings account.

Students who come to The HUB with cash may wish to open a U.S. bank account in order to make payments. A bank account allows students to securely deposit cash and receive credit and/or debit cards, personal checks and cashier's checks, both of which are accepted forms of payment at The HUB. While students may use any bank they wish, Carnegie Mellon University partners with PNC Bank and a number of locations can be found nearby.

Opening a Bank Account: What You'll Need

US Mailing Address

You may use an on- or off-campus address to open a bank account. If you live in a dormitory, please provide the building name, room number, street address and zip code. Please note that a bank will not accept an SMC box as an address.

US Phone Number

You will need to provide a U.S. phone number. You may use a cell phone number or, if you live on campus, you may provide a dormitory phone number.

Two Forms of Identification

Acceptable forms of identification include your CMU ID card, driver's license, passport or visa. If you do not have two of these forms of identification, contact your bank of choice to determine which additional forms of identification they accept.

Personal Country Identification Number

Known as a Social Security Number (SSN) in the United States, personal country identification numbers have various names in each country and help the government identify individuals. Students who do not have an SSN and whose countries do not provide personal country identification numbers may still open a U.S. bank account.

Banking Locations

PNC Bank: CUC Basement Level

The PNC Bank in the basement level of the Jared L. Cohon University Center (CUC) provides nearly every service offered at other PNC locations. However, due to size and staffing, service may take longer at the CUC location than at other branches. Additionally, while the CUC location will be able to create your bank account, final documents and bank cards will take several days to reach you.

The PNC location on Craig Street is a full service branch and may be able to to complete your full account set-up, including cash deposit and cashier's check receipt, in one visit. Setting up a bank account can take between 45 to 60 minutes, so allow adequate time in your schedule to complete the process.
