Students, faculty, staff and community members gathered at the fence on Monday, March 26 at the Justice Rally for Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old shot to death in Florida by a neighborhood watch volunteer on Feb. 26. Speakers at the rally urged attendees to discuss the role of ethnic/racial profiling, stereotypes and judicial bias and called for further investigation by law enforcement. A voter registration drive followed the rally. Carnegie Mellon Black Graduate Student Organization Vice President Brittany Claud and President Ricky Burgess helped organize the rally.
Activist Kimberly Ellis, a scholar of African-American studies, urged people not to overlook local communities, where they can impact change the most through their actions.
