Digital Music Pioneer Comes to CMU Oct. 6 as Part of VIA Music & New Media Festival

The second annual VIA Music & New Media Festival brings a lecture and performance by innovative, minimalist composer David Borden to Carnegie Mellon's Kresge Theater beginning at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 6. Borden's talk is titled "The Moog Synthesizer Lecture: The Man I Knew and the Machine I Learned." Borden is the creator of the world's first synthesizer ensemble and founder of Cornell University's Digital Music Department. Following his lecture he will debut his four-member ensemble, "FRKWYS 7."

"David Borden's concert is a rare chance to hear a real pioneer," said Carnegie Mellon Music and Computer Science Professor Roger Dannenberg. "Synthesizers are ubiquitous today, but once they were experiemental and signaled a radical transformation. Borden offers a connection to this time of innovation in music and technology."

The VIA Music & New Media Festival, co-directed by Lauren Goshinski, marketing and communications manager for the School of Art, will be held Oct. 5-9 at various venues in Pittsburgh. CMU artists featured in the festival are Jacob Ciocci, Matt Barton, "Crank Orchestra" and workshops from CODELab students, Spencer Longo,  Michael Mallis, Michael McParlane, Michael Pisano, Tom McConnell, Jen Inman, Di Ay Battad, Ben Kinsley, Michelle Fried, Eileen Maxson, Jerstin Crosby, Dan Wilcox and Heather Knight.
