Dean of University Libraries Gloriana St. Clair has made a gift to the university to name the Engineering & Science Library after her longtime partner Roger Sorrells, who died on Sept. 2. The gift will establish an endowment in his honor that will support the Engineering & Science Library and its holdings, and support the enterprise of open access scholarly communications in science and engineering.

Pittsburgh magazine has named Kamal Nigam, who earned his Ph.D. in computer science at CMU in 2001, to its "40 under 40" list of emerging leaders under age 40 in Pittsburgh. Nigam is engineering director and a co-founder of Google Pittsburgh.

To mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's "The Tempest," Christopher Warren, assistant professor of English, wrote an oped titled, "O Brave New World," which was published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  Read it at: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11304/1186315-109-0.stm.

Aquion Energy, a Carnegie Mellon University startup, received the 2011 World Technology Award in Energy for its work in creating a safe, reliable and affordable way to store energy. Founded by CMU Materials Science and Engineering Professor Jay Whitacre, Aquion has developed a novel sodium-ion battery optimized for stationary storage applications with a targeted commercial release of 2012.
