News Briefs

  • For the second consecutive summer, several elementary school students from the Qatar Academy, between the ages of 10 and 12, are attending workshops at CMU sponsored by C-MITES, the Carnegie Mellon Institute for Talented Elementary and Secondary Students (http://www.cmites.org). The workshops they are attending are "Programming Using Alice," "Explorations in Science" and "Amusement Park Physics." In addition to the workshops they are enjoying some of the cultural attractions of Pittsburgh, including the National Aviary, Carnegie Science Center and Kennywood Park. Also visiting from Qatar is Kenrick Fernandes, a rising sophomore in computer science at CMU Qatar, who has been conducting a robotics club for children at the Qatar Academy. Fernandes is auditing the C-MITES workshop in robotics and visiting with other CMU computer science and robotics groups.
  • Carnegie Mellon, with financial support from the National Science Foundation, will host the International Linguistics Olympiad July 24-30. This is the first time the Olympiad has been held in the U.S. with 80 to 120 high school students expected to participate. Lori Levin, an associate research professor in the Language Technologies Institute (LTI), is heading the local committee. The Olympiad helps identify an aptitude in analytical skills and math.
  • Thank you to the CMU community for playing an integral role in the effort to improve the lives of local residents. This year, the United Way of Allegheny County, which is celebrating Donor Appreciation Week from July 25 - 29, raised more than $31 million for area programs and health and human service organizations. Carnegie Mellon donors generously contributed more than $220,000 to this total, ranking as the 26th most successful campaign out of more than 700 workplace campaigns in the region. • Enrollment Services has created "My Plaid Student," a secure website that enables parents and families to view certain information about their student, including their student's invoices. A student must first grant access to a user (typically a family member) on Student Information Online. After access is granted, the user is e-mailed an invitation to register for My Plaid Student. Once registered, the user may then log on to view their student's information, as authorized by the student. As new features become available, the student can update the areas of information that are accessible to the user.
