Personal Mention

William L. Scherlis, a professor of computer science and director of the Institute for Software Research, and Ragunathan "Raj" Rajkumar, the George Westinghouse Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Robotics, have been named 2012 Fellows of the Institute for Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE), the world's largest technical professional association. Rajkumar, co-director of the General Motors-CMU Collaborative Research Laboratories, was named a fellow in recognition of his contributions to predictable real-time systems and operating systems, while Scherlis was recognized for his contributions to software analysis and software engineering education. Greg Shannon, chief scientist for the SEI's CERT Program, testified before the House Committee on Homeland Security, Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection and Security Technologies Dec. 6. His testimony was part of the hearing titled “Draft Legislative Proposal on Cybersecurity,” which was held to discuss a bill proposing amendments to the Homeland Security Act of 2002 to make improvements in the laws relating to cybersecurity. In his testimony, Shannon discussed how to leverage current efforts in information sharing, the strengths and weaknesses of both the current efforts and the draft legislation, and specific recommendations based on the CERT Program’s 23 years of experience and ideas from public health models.

English Professor Hilary Masters' latest novel, "Post: A Fable," has won a Best Books 2011 Award., the premier online magazine and review website for mainstream and independent publishing houses, announced winners in more than 140 categories covering print, e-books and audio books. Master's "Post: A Fable" won the literary fiction category. Read more about the book.

ETC Executive Producer Don Marinelli was the keynote  speaker at the 4th Annual Conference in the Science and Art of Videogames at the University of Porto in Portugal. ETC Director of Admissions and Marketing Rebecca Lombardi also spoke to conference attendees about opportunities in the videogame industry.

Kathy M. Newman, associate professor of English, wrote an opinion piece for the New Haven Register about her experience marching alongside striking clerical and maintenance workers at Yale 20 years ago. Read “20 years after GESO strike, many of goals accomplished.”
