News Brief: TEDxCMU Sunday

Nine Carnegie Mellon students representing 11 majors will host the second annual TEDxCMU conference Sunday, April 3 in the University Center’s McConomy Auditorium. Speakers will explore the theme “ImPossible” by discussing challenges in their lives and how they turn them into opportunity.

College of Fine Arts faculty member Michael Chemers and School of Computer Science faculty member Luis von Ahn are among the slate of speakers, which also includes entrepreneurs, musicians, authors, business executives and a human rights activist.

James Pan, a senior Mellon College of Science student and president of TEDxCMU, is particularly excited to welcome to campus his post-graduation employer Dr. William Gahl, clinical director of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health.

“When we were formulating our theme and speaker list, I immediately thought of Dr. Gahl,” Pan said. “He sees patients with seemingly impossible diagnoses and takes very innovative and bold approaches to treating them.”

While the TEDxCMU audience is full, the talks will be streamed live at http://tedxcmu.com/watch. Follow @TEDxCMU on Twitter for event updates.
