Event: Carnegie Mellon University students, faculty, staff and alumni will participate in the fourth annual 1000plus day of service Saturday, March 26 in collaboration with Pittsburgh Cares. This student-led initiative connects people of different interests who share the common goal of promoting service. More than 1,000 volunteers participated in 2010, and organizers hope to surpass this record in 2011.

Volunteers will work at more than 20 sites across the city. One group will organize donations, wash vans and decorate the Gwen’s Girls building at 400 N. Lexington Ave. in Point Breeze from 9 a.m. to noon. Gwen’s Girls’ mission is to empower girls, ages 8 to 18, to have productive futures through holistic, gender-specific programs, education and experiences.

From 1 to 4 p.m., volunteers will sort inventory, paint and organize the Storehouse for Teachers at 281 Corliss St. in Pittsburgh’s West End. The organization provides teachers an opportunity to shop for classroom and school supplies for their students at no cost.

When: Most service projects will take place from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, March 26.
