Event: Frances Allen and Barbara Liskov, the first two women to receive the highest honor in computer science, the A.M. Turing Award, will share their insights at OurCS (Opportunities for Undergraduate Research in Computer Science), a workshop for undergraduate women considering graduate study in computer science. Liskov, the Institute Professor at MIT, will present the OurCS keynote address Friday morning and Allen, an IBM Fellow Emerita at the T.J. Watson Research Center in Hawthorne, N.Y., will be the guest speaker at the OurCS dinner Friday evening.

Eighty-five women from across the United States and several foreign countries will attend the workshop, which will give them a chance to work on research teams with CMU faculty and other scientists and engineers. The workshop is designed to expose participants to the type of research they might do if they pursue advanced computer science degrees. Women are underrepresented among computer scientists; less than 20 percent of computer science Ph.D. students nationwide are women.
