Join us for a discussion with Jennifer Golbeck, Professor in the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, as she discusses some of the more significant events since the November 2020 election - including the insurrection and COVID-19 - and the paths forward for measuring, understanding, and intervening in US domestic online extremism.

This event is the inaugural lecture of the Social Cybersecurity series within the IPS Policy Forum, presented in partnership with the Center for Informed Democracy & Social Cybersecurity.

About Gloria D. Steele

Gloria D. Steele began her role as Chief Operating Officer of CARE in January 2021. A career member of the US Government’s Senior Executive Service, Ms. Steele served as Deputy Assistant Administrator at the US Agency for International Development (USAID), where she led the Bureau for Asia for nearly four years starting in January 2017. She oversaw a program budget of $1.6 billion in 30 countries and a staff of 1,300 in fiscal year 2020. Prior to this assignment, she served as USAID’s Mission Director for the Philippines, the Pacific Islands, and Mongolia, with a program budget of over $500 million from 2010-2015.

About General H.R. McMaster:

Until recently, H.R. McMaster was the 26th Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. He served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army for thirty-four years before retiring as a Lieutenant General in June 2018.

From 2014 to 2017, McMaster designed the future Army as Director, Army Capabilities Integration Center and Deputy Commanding General, Futures, US Army Training and Doctrine Command. As Commanding General, Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning, he oversaw all training and education for the Army’s infantry, armor, and cavalry force. His extensive experience leading soldiers and organizations in wartime includes Commander, Combined Joint Inter-Agency Task Force Shafafiyat in Kabul, Afghanistan from 2010 to 2012; Commander, Third Armored Cavalry Regiment in Iraq from 2005 -2006; and Commander, Eagle Troop Second Armored Cavalry Regiment in Operation Desert Storm from 1990-1991. McMaster also served overseas as advisor to the most senior commanders in the Middle East, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
