Carnegie Mellon University

CMIST is an interdisciplinary institute that works across Carnegie Mellon University to tackle the risks and benefits of emerging technologies in war and peace.

In May 2023, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) launched a major new university-wide initiative devoted to the wise development, use and governance of new and emerging technologies that are changing national and international security.

CMU is a place of creativity, entrepreneurship, pragmatism, and ambition, with a tradition of strategically focusing its efforts and resources across the university in areas where it can lead, and then pursuing those areas with startling intensity.

The Carnegie Mellon Institute for Strategy & Technology, or CMIST is just such a strategic undertaking.  The home for Carnegie Mellon University’s (CMU) study of Political Science and International Relations, CMIST is uniquely poised to take advantage of the university’s strengths in computer science and engineering and its distinctive tradition of collaborative, cross-university, cross-disciplinary research.  Focused on questions of power and governance, CMIST builds new frameworks for managing current and future global security challenges.

In its structure, CMIST is a Team of Teams that works collaboratively with cutting-edge Carnegie Mellon University research units, including the School of Computer Science, Cy-Lab, the Army Artificial Intelligence Integration Center, Heinz College, the Block Center, Dietrich College, the Software Engineering Institute, the Tepper School of Business, the College of Engineering, and the Engineering and Public Policy program. CMIST’s home for academics and teaching is the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
