Bio

Mr. Kowalsky is an Adjunct Professor of Information Technology Management at Carnegie Mellon University – Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Expertise and courses taught include IT management, advanced applied project management and advises as a SEI Cyber Security Program Coach. He has been a faculty member since 1987. Teaching since 1976, he has taught technical courses at the University of Pittsburgh and the Community College of Allegheny County. Mr. Kowalsky received his IT Leadership certification from the Institute for the Certification of Computer Professionals. He holds memberships in many local and national professional organizations including faculty in the Chief Information Officer and CISO Executive Education Programs of Carnegie Mellon University.

Mr. Kowalsky received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1976 and a master’s degree in Public Management from the H. John Heinz School of Business and Public Policy of Carnegie Mellon University in 1985. Mr. Kowalsky was awarded a Certificate of Leadership for successfully completing the University of Pittsburgh Katz Business School Leadership Program in 1996.

Mr. Kowalsky retired as the Chief Information Officer for the Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE). Prior to CORE, Mr. Kowalsky joined Education Management Corporation as Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, a position held for 6 years. For 22 years prior to joining Education Management Corporation, he held CIO positions for St. Clair Hospital, St. Francis Health System, and Allegheny Health Education and Research Foundation in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Beginning his career with IBM as a developer, he has over 40 years of information technology experience.

Recognition includes the achievement of the 100 Most Wired Healthcare Organizations and designated as one of Computerworld’s Premier 100 CIO’s along with being designated finalist for the Pittsburgh Technology CIO of the Year in 2005 and 2006. The Pittsburgh Technology Council Awarded Education Management the leader in the category of IT service provider for its customers in 2005. Mr. Kowalsky was awarded the 2020 CIO Choice and Pittsburgh Technology Council Visionary of the Year with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
