Voucher Process Frequently Asked Questions

Students should carefully review the Course Changes webpage and consult with their primary academic advisors before initiating any voucher requests.

The University Registrar’s Office recommends making voucher requests as soon as possible, and no later than 4:30 p.m. on the day before last day of classes. If your primary academic advisor is unavailable to discuss your voucher elections, please consult with other resources within your academic department.

No. Each summer session is treated as a separate semester. You may use a voucher in summer session one and a second voucher in summer session two.

Rarely. Students who have pending or documented academic disciplinary action may only use a voucher to drop a course with course instructor approval in accordance with the Academic Disciplinary Actions Process, otherwise, they will be re-enrolled in the course.

While the spring 2020 interim grading policy allowed students to use a pass/no pass election to avoid an AI penalty, the new pass/no pass voucher option may not be used to avoid these penalties.

The voucher is internal to Carnegie Mellon courses only. Because cross registration add and drop deadlines vary by host instituition, the host school will not honor a voucher so late in the semester. It is advised to drop your course by the host institution deadline to avoid an incomplete or undesired final grade. Please be sure to fill out a Course Withdrawal (pdf) form by the host institution drop deadline.

Courses taken pass/no pass will not usually fulfill graduation, major, additional major or minor requirements.

Courses taken pass/no pass only fulfill prerequisite requirements for courses that require a prerequisite grade of D or higher, even if you earned a higher letter grade before converting to pass/no pass.
