New SIO Feature: Name Pronunciation & Pronoun Tool

We are pleased to introduce a new tool to promote a more inclusive environment at CMU. Through NameCoach, students can:

  • Record the pronunciation of their names
  • Store a phonetic spelling of their names
  • Store their pronouns

Similar to the Preferred Name initiative, NameCoach removes the guessing game of how academic and administrative advisors and instructors address students and helps to support students' identities, while encouraging a culture of respect.

If a student chooses to use NameCoach via Student Information Online (SIO) to store the information listed above, it will be shared with those authorized to view their student summary in CMU's internal student information system (S3 Admin Console). Instructors will be able to access this information through Canvas, too.

Additional details, instructions and resources may be found on The HUB website.

NameCoach was made available through a joint effort by the University Registrar’s Office, Enrollment Services, the Office of the Vice Provost for Education, Heinz College, and Tepper School of Business. Students experiencing issues while using NameCoach may alert us via the feedback link in SIO. General feedback about NameCoach or pronoun usage may be directed to the University Registrar's Office at cmuregistrar@andrew.cmu.edu
