Employee Resource Groups Kick Off in September
Last fall, as a result of the Climate Task Force Listening Tours, the Office of Human Resources began researching and developing a framework to provide resources and support to employees interested in establishing employee resource groups (ERGs) at CMU. ERGs are groups formed by members of an organization with the purpose to unite individuals to a common cause, improve awareness and engagement, and provide a structured framework and network for members.
To pilot the process, OHR worked to identify three ERGs — the LGBTQIA+ Faculty and Staff Alliance, the Black Faculty and Staff Alliance, and the Veteran’s Alliance. Each ERG has been assigned two co-leads who have helped to develop the ERG and to facilitate events/activities.
After extensive planning and consideration, the ERGs had their first events in September and October:
- The LGBTQIA+ Faculty and Staff Alliance kicked off on Wednesday, September 22, with over 30 members present. The Zoom meeting included a presentation from the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion and an opportunity for members to connect via breakout rooms. Additionally, members were encouraged to participate in National Coming Out Day activities sponsored by Staff Council and the Office of the Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
- The Black Faculty and Staff Alliance had its first meeting on Thursday, September 30. The meeting included robust discussion and dialogue. The group also worked to brainstorm ideas for a unique name, and they will eventually vote on an official new name for their group.
- While the Veteran’s Alliance has not yet had its first meeting, on October 6 the group joined ROTC to host an Open House at CMU’s Veteran’s Resource Center. Provost Garrett joined the group in celebrating the launch of the new space, which is located at 4615 Forbes Avenue in the GATF Building.
While the first events were a success, the ERG co-leads are actively planning their next gatherings based on the feedback from members. If you are interested in joining any of these groups, please check out the ERG webpage for more information.
