About the Green Practices Committee

"The Green Practices Committee will strive to develop university practices that improve environmental quality, decrease waste and conserve natural resources and energy, thereby establishing Carnegie Mellon as a practical model for other universities and companies."

As part of the Carnegie Mellon strategic initiative to enhance the scope and impact of our education and research programs related to the environment, the Environmental Practices Committee (EPC) was charged in April 1999 by President Cohon to develop a plan for an expanded environmental practices program on campus.

The EPC identified areas of opportunity for an expanded environmental practices program at Carnegie Mellon through study of the current state of environmental practices on campus, initiatives at other college campuses and discussions with various Carnegie Mellon groups.

Opportunities are grouped into three categories:

  • Campus Life
  • Facility Infrastructure
  • Transportation

Other Campus Sustainability Committees

The Sustainability Committee works to involve staff in supporting the university’s green initiatives in coordination with CMU’s Green Practices Committee.  All Staff are welcome to participate in the committee meetings held the 2nd Friday of every Month from 12:00-1:00.

We help staff participate in these ways:

- Awareness: recycling programs, informing staff about university initiatives such as storm water management and 100% wind power, the Scotty Goes Green Office Certification Program and the many ways we can be more sustainable in our work lives.

- Assistance: information about hosting zero waste events, green purchasing information, green catering information, professional development classes about how to implement Scotty Goes Green.

- Activism: “Styrofoam” Resolution, holding dining vendors to sustainable practices, (currectly reviewing the dining RFP proposal for sustainability), encourage dining vendors to compost, and encourage the university to purchase 30% recycled printer/copier paper.

A representative from the Sustainability Committee is typically designated as a liaison to participate on the Green Practices Committee.

Sustainability Value from the Strategic Plan 2025:

Sustainability, reflected in our shared commitment to lead by example in preserving and protecting our natural resources, and in our approach to responsible financial planning
