Sokalski & Holm recognized for achievements

Each year, the College of Engineering recognizes faculty with outstanding academic and research achievements. This year two MSE faculty were awarded for their hard work.

Vincent Sokalski
, Associate Professor MSE was awarded the Philip L. Dowd Fellowship award in recognition of his educational contributions. Vincent believes in creating more diverse and inclusive lectures and his latest project centers around the crystallography lab and the Structure of Materials course. He plans to leverage more advanced techniques for visualizing 3D crystals and to incorporate 3D printing into the course. Vincent also plans to revamp MSE's laser pointer lab to demonstrate how the structure of DNA was determined and to highlight the contributions of Rosalind Franklin, who historically has not been suitably recognized.

A 21st Century Approach to Crystallography: Modern Tools and Diverse Content

Elizabeth Holm, Professor MSE was awarded the Benjamin Richard Teare Teaching Award in recognition of her excellence in engineering education. Elizabeth puts her students first and it doesn't go unrecognized. She has received a perfect instructor score from her students in a required sophomore course and has been selected by students as the best professor in MSE time and time again. With courses spanning the graduate and undergraduate level, Elizabeth has consistently innovated MSE's educational program through the introduction of new courses and by exceeding expectations when it came time to adapt her courses for the virtual world.
