Beth Dickey appointed Teddy and Wilton Hawkins Distinguished Professor

Begining January 20, Beth Dickey will head the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon University. She has been appointed the Teddy and Wilton Hawkins Distinguished Professor Chair. Prior to joining CMU, Beth was a Distinguished Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University where she also directed the Center for Dielectrics and Piezoelectrics.

The Teddy and Wilton Hawkins Professorship was established through the estate of Wilton A. Hawkins in 2000. The professorship supports a faculty member at the College of Engineering who is engaged in materials research. Beth’s research develops processing-structure-property relationships for materials in which the macroscopic physical properties are governed by point defects, grain boundaries or internal interfaces. She has over 150 peer-reviewed journal publications, which have been cited over twenty-thousand times. Early in her career she received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for her work on metal-ceramic interfaces. She is a Fellow in the American Ceramic Society, the Microscopy Society of America, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Beth’s seminal research in materials makes her an excellent choice for this Chair.
