McHenry Group among R&D 100 Award Winners

Carnegie Mellon University was part of a team with the National Energy Technology Laboratory, Metglas, Inc. and Eaton Corporation to be awarded an R&D 100 Award for Cobalt-Based Nanocrystalline Alloys for Gapless Inductor and Sensor Applications.

This work featured patented
CMU/NETL developed Co-based metal amorphous nanocomposite magnetic materials in inductive and magnetic sensing components. These were cast at scale by Metglas and post-processed by a novel strain annealing technique that allows tunability of the magnetic permeability in such a way as to reduce high frequency losses to result in significant size reductions in power inductors.
