The Next Generation of AI Won’t Replace Humans – It Will Work With Them

June 29, 2026

There is a growing divide between those excited by AI’s promise and those worried about how it could replace human jobs, creativity and decision-making. Coty Gonzalez sees a future where humans and AI work together as teammates. She and a cohort of collaborators have recently published three scientific papers investigating the facets of “cognitive AI” and how it could partner with humans on teams.

GEE! Awards

June 2026

The C.O.R.A. disaster management game, developed at the NSF AI Institute for Societal Decision Making, is a finalist for the 2026 GEE! Learning Game Awards!

C.O.R.A. combines human decision-making with advanced AI tools, and challenges players to figure out how to best distribute limited supplies like food, shelter, and emergency personnel under high pressure.

The People’s Choice voting is now live if you’d like to support us!

AISDM Workshop: Dynamic Alignment

September 24-25, 2026

In 2026, we will focus on the emerging challenge of dynamic alignment to achieve human-AI complementarity: designing AI systems that not only emulate human preferences, but also coordinate effectively with humans over trajectories of interaction. We are particularly motivated by the observation that current alignment paradigms largely optimize for static preferences and single-turn evaluations, while many deployment challenges emerge only through longitudinal interaction. This workshop therefore aims to bridge perspectives from ML and the social sciences to better understand how to design, optimize, and evaluate human-AI systems operating in dynamic environments.

AISDM Workshop: Human-AI Complementarity for Decision Making

September 25-26, 2025

The goals of the workshop are: To deliver state of the art instruction on desirable ideas to achieve Human-AI complementarity for decision making. To generate common knowledge about pressing research challenges To generate new shared ideas to address these challenges in future research.

We aim for concrete outcomes spawned by the collective AIdeas of the participants in the workshop including: specific challenges that need to be addressed to achieve complementarity in flexible Human-AI Teams and concrete proposals to address those challenges.
