Graduate Study Designed Around You

Start Research Early — Really Early

We believe students learn science by doing science.

  • Many Ph.D. students begin research in their first semester, joining a group as soon as they arrive.
  • Others choose optional lab rotations, giving them the opportunity to explore research areas and find the ideal advisor match by early in the second semester.
  • In some cases, admitted students can even start their research in the summer.
Early engagement lets students build momentum quickly — and begin contributing to cutting-edge work from day one.

A Culture of Collaboration

Our department thrives on interdisciplinary partnerships.

  • Students frequently develop projects with co‑advisors or maintain strong mentoring relationships with multiple faculty.
  • Collaborations extend beyond chemistry into engineering, biological sciences, physics, computer science, and more.

This collaborative ecosystem encourages bold, imaginative research and prepares students to succeed in diverse, team‑driven environments.

Flexible Coursework Tailored to Your Goals

Our flexible academic structure empowers every student to shape their own intellectual path.

  • Course requirements are typically completed within 2–3 semesters, allowing students to focus on research early.
  • Students can select specialized courses aligned with their research interests and long‑term career plans.
  • Additional advanced courses can be audited later, offering ongoing learning without slowing research progress.

Training for Impactful Careers

Our graduates move confidently into careers across academia, industry, government, and entrepreneurship. Faculty advisors are committed to helping students develop not only scientific expertise but also the professional skills needed to thrive.

We emphasize:

  • Scientific communication
  • Leadership and mentoring
  • Innovation and strategic problem‑solving

The result? Alumni who make a difference — whether they’re publishing groundbreaking research, founding start‑ups, developing policy or teaching the next generation of scientists.

Student Life

Chemistry Graduate Student Advisory Committee (GSAC)

GSAC represents Chemistry graduate students and brings their ideas and concerns to the department. Members help improve the program, give feedback on requirements, and serve as a resource if you have questions or need guidance.

MCS Graduate Student Advisory Committee (MCS GSAC)

MCS GSAC includes two graduate students from each MCS department. This group advises Associate Dean for Faculty and Graduate Affairs Dejan Slepčev and organizes college‑wide events like poster sessions and career panels.

Graduate Student Assembly (GSA)

GSA is the university‑wide governing body for graduate students. It works to improve student life, offers social and professional events, and helps fund activities such as departmental happy hours and the graduate student lounge.
