Our Scope

From the moment a staff member is hired to the retirement send off, our programs and services are designed to aid the employee in his or her success.

Orientation
The Year One Initiative targets staff members in their first year of employment with CMU. From formally welcoming new employees to campus through the New Hire Orientation program, to the Success Starts With Me series and the Year One coaches program, our goal is to help new employees get acclimated and become familiar with the resources available to them in their new role.

Compliance
Understanding the rules and regulations that comply with state and federal laws and mandates is critical for each member of the Carnegie Mellon staff community. The staff in Professional Development Services partners with members of the campus community who have responsibilities in the areas of compliance and policy oversight to promote compliance education and training opportunities. In addition, our supervision series provides information and strategies to supervisors on how to communicate expectations and manage accountability.

Skill and Competency Development
Staff members perform better and feel more positive about their work when they have mastered the skills needed to successfully complete their tasks. We examine the skills needed to complete a particular task and go one step further to identify the underlying competencies needed to consistently perform. Taking this foundational approach we encourage the development of the individual’s capabilities which can be translated and transferred to a variety of settings.

Organizational Development
Carnegie Mellon is a place that values collaboration and innovation. Aimed at developing high performing groups and organizations, the staff in Professional Development Services offers programs in group dynamics, working with others, problem solving within groups and leadership.

Strategic Initiatives
While the day-to-day work is important it is also imperative that leaders and organizations plan ahead. Whether a department wants to look at a process in a different light or develop a comprehensive strategic plan, the staff in Professional Development Services can offer support in the areas of strategic planning, creative problem solving, managing change and SWOT-E analyses.
