Summer Study Abroad in Monteverde, Costa Rica

May 21 – June 23, 2026

The Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics (LCAL) along with the Department of Statistics and Data Science (SDS) has partnered with the Monteverde Institute in the Puntarenas region of Costa Rica to offer a study abroad and experiential learning program.

About Monteverde, Costa Rica

Monteverde, nestled in Costa Rica’s lush cloud forest, is world-renowned for its rich biodiversity and commitment to conservation. This small mountain community offers a unique blend of breathtaking natural beauty, sustainable living and vibrant local culture. Students can explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, experience hands-on learning in ecology and environmental studies and engage with a welcoming community that values both tradition and innovation. It’s an ideal setting for those seeking adventure, cultural immersion and a deeper understanding of sustainability.

About the Program

The Monteverde program, based at the Monteverde Institute (MVI), offers students an unparalleled opportunity to study in one of the most biodiverse regions on earth. Founded in 1986, MVI is a leader in sustainability and community engagement, located within the Monteverde Cloud Forest—a vital part of the Bellbird Biological Corridor and home to thousands of species across eight distinct ecological zones. Students will gain hands-on experience in environmental stewardship while deepening their knowledge of Spanish and Costa Rican culture. In addition, those studying statistics and data science will collaborate with researchers and community organizations on real-world data projects, applying their skills to support conservation and local initiatives.
