Bio

Dr. Nicole Kliewer is a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy and the Carnegie Mellon Institute for Strategy & Technology (CMIST). Her research focuses on the role of military service in American politics, with an emphasis on campaigns, elections, and Congressional behavior. She also teaches courses in American Politics, focusing on these subjects along with the influence of media in politics.

Dr. Kliewer's current research and ongoing book project analyze how military service records are strategically communicated in US congressional campaigns in the post-Vietnam era. This research highlights how candidates and parties utilize public trust in military service members and their associated traits to enhance their public image. Additionally, her work investigates the implications of military candidates for civil-military relations.

Before joining CMU, she completed an American Political Science Association Congressional Fellowship, where she worked in the US House of Representatives. She also received a Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton University.
