Shaping Future STEM Leaders: Green Awarded DoD SMART Scholarship

We're proud to announce that Junior Harrison Green, currently pursuing bachelor's degrees in both Environmental Engineering and Engineering and Public Policy, has been awarded the Department of Defense Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship.

The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program offers students full tuition coverage for up to five years, mentorship, summer internships, a stipend, and guaranteed post-graduate employment with the Department of Defense. This unique opportunity provides access to over 100 cutting-edge laboratories across various branches of the Department of Defense, allowing scholars to gain hands-on experience in their field.

Throughout his summer internship, Green will collaborate with seasoned mentors to refine his technical skills. Upon graduation, Green will transition to a full-time role at Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Southeast in Jacksonville, FL. From here, he will be placed into a specific team, Compliance, Conservation, Cultural Resources, or Restoration, related to Environmental Engineering.

The Department of Defense is the largest employer of federal scientists and engineers, with nearly 300,000 civilian STEM professionals, and plays a pivotal role in nurturing the nation’s STEM pipeline. This program supports students in 24 disciplines crucial to national security by covering tuition, offering a stipend and internships, and ensuring employment at a DoD facility. Scholars commit to working at a DoD Sponsoring Facility after graduation, equal to their scholarship duration. Established in 2006, SMART has awarded over 4,200 scholarships.
