Parkway East (I-376) Closure Impacts

Please be advised that the upcoming Commercial Street Bridge Replacement Project on Interstate 376 (Parkway East) could significantly disrupt your regional travel and daily commutes to Carnegie Mellon University's Pittsburgh campus.

Beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday, July 10, PennDOT will fully close the Parkway East in both directions between the Edgewood/Swissvale (Exit 77) interchange and the Squirrel Hill Tunnel for approximately 25 days.

The official detour routes will have a direct and substantial effect on traffic around our campus:
  • Westbound (inbound) traffic will be detoured off the Parkway East at the Wilkinsburg/Edgewood exit, routed onto Penn Avenue and Fifth Avenue through Oakland (passing near the CMU campus) and rejoin the Parkway East at the Boulevard of the Allies.
  • Eastbound (outbound) traffic will follow a similar reverse route, exiting onto Forbes Avenue in Oakland and following South Bellefield, Fifth and Penn Avenues back to the Parkway.
  • Road closures will appear in GPS apps; however, PennDOT’s official detour routes might not. Please plan your route in advance.
With roughly 100,000 daily drivers affected, heavy congestion is expected along detour routes and surrounding roads. While faculty and staff who live east of Oakland likely will experience the greatest disruption, all commuters should anticipate ripple-effect delays across the region
