Mathematics Maturity Survey

The Mathematics Maturity Survey (MMS) is a 2.5 hour exam given at 8am on Monday of orientation week. It is for first-year students who wish to take the honors course 21-242 Matrix Theory or other advanced courses in their first semester. Any student wishing to do so should have experience with proof-based college mathematics beyond calculus. Students should consult their advisor about whether the MMS is appropriate for them. The registration deadline is August 4.

The MMS contains a mixture of multiple choice, short answer, and long answer questions. It is designed to assess how much college level mathematics the student has mastered and whether they are ready to read and write proofs at an advanced level. We do not publish study materials or sample exams.

Note that the MMS is only used for placement in the first semester. After the first semester, placement in honors courses is based on performance in Carnegie Mellon courses.

Exam administration

Registered students will be notified of the exam location before orientation week. Students should arrive for their exam by 7:45am so they may begin promptly at 8am. The exam will be administered on paper. Scratch paper will be provided. Students must bring their CMU photo ID and two pencils, and will be required to present their ID when the exam is complete.

Academic Integrity

You cannot use any aids (textbooks, phones, notes, integral tables, friends, calculators, etc.) If you are observed using any aids, your exam will be invalidated, your advisor will be informed, and you may be subject to disciplinary action as per the university policy on academic integrity.

Any questions about the MMS should be directed to mathplacement@cmu.edu.
