Carnegie Mellon University

Welcome to Institutional Research and Analysis (IR&A)!

Institutional Research and Analysis (IR&A) supports informed decision-making by identifying information needs and providing data, analysis, and evidence to guide planning, evaluation, and institutional effectiveness. Through the collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of information about students, faculty, staff, programs, and operations, institutional research helps universities understand performance, assess experiences and outcomes, respond to accountability requirements, and plan for the future.

At Carnegie Mellon University, the Office of Institutional Research and Analysis serves as a trusted partner to academic and administrative units across the university. Working under the Office of the Vice Provost for Institutional Effectiveness and Planning, IR&A engages with campus stakeholders to understand information needs, provide reliable data and analytical expertise, and support evidence-based decision-making. Through a consultative and collaborative approach, the office advances institutional planning, assessment, reporting, and strategic initiatives by delivering meaningful analyses of the CMU community and the environment in which it operates. IR&A also serves as a steward of official university information, ensuring that data are accessible, accurate, and useful for both internal planning and external reporting.
