| The Hornbostel
architectural style of the original campus plan is evident in the newer
buildings such as the University Center and the Purnell Center for
the Arts, which line the Cut, as well as the traditional Baker, Porter
and Doherty halls. The university's signature tower on Hamerschlag Hall rises over Pittsburgh's nearby Schenley Park, where students relax in nature's setting. Several blocks from campus lie the residential neighborhoods and shopping districts of Squirrel Hill and Shadyside. Students flock there to shops, restaurants, movie theatres and coffeehouses. A few blocks in the other direction students meet the hustle and bustle of Oakland's hospitals, educational institutions, restaurants, night clubs and stores around the University of Pittsburgh. Carnegie Mellon's campus, nestled among wooded hills, quaint neighborhoods and lively business districts, provides students with an environment that combines the best of both worlds—an urban campus in a green setting. |
