Giving Tuesday is on December 1st!

By Al Hribar

Giving Tuesday is this coming week on December 1. It is a day for us to each give to our favorite non-profit organizations who are helping others to survive financially and emotionally particularly during the unexpected impacts caused by COVID-19. Because of this pandemic, all our lives have been significantly impacted in many ways. This year it is especially important for those that can do so, to donate to help those institutions that play a meaningful role in our lives.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at CMU is a 501(c)3 tax exempt non-profit whose mission is to help its members both socially and emotionally by providing stimulating, thought provoking enjoyable lifelong learning experiences. This is vitally important during this time of unprecedented isolation driven by the coronavirus, which may very well extend well into the coming New Year.

As you evaluate and make donations this coming Tuesday, consider donating some funds to the Osher at CMU 4.0 Project. Osher at CMU is actively working to finalize the plans for the new Osher home in Cyert Hall on the Carnegie Mellon University campus. If all proceeds as planned, we may be ready to move into the new space in Cyert Hall by late summer next year. Donating now to the 4.0 Project now will help assure that we can move forward with these plans and be able to provide an enhanced program of learning and socialization in a new, optimized world class learning environment. The new Home in Cyert Hall is being planned to support in-person and online learning opportunities in order to address member preferences and to be able to respond to any local or state requirements related to coronavirus pandemic. The Osher programming whether in-person or online provides social and learning opportunities that helps “feed our souls” and experience and enjoy a happier life.

We have currently raised $555,000 or about 40% of the $1.3 million needed to complete the new Cyert Hall space. For Tuesday’s Day of Giving, our goal is to raise $5,000. Please help us reach this goal by making a donation to the 4.0 Project on Tuesday, December 1st.

To help, you can either send a check made payable to Carnegie Mellon University with the notation “Osher - 4.0 Project” to the Osher at CCMU office at 5000 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213, OR go to the Osher website at https://www.cmu.edu/osher/donate-to-4.0/index.html and click to donate directly to the 4.0 Project with a credit card. While your gift is going directly to build our new home, the donation must be made to CMU because they are managing the project.

Thank you and may your Thanksgiving be joyful.
