CEE-TP Director of Executive Education Presents Ungrading: Will this be on the exam?

The Director of Executive Education at CEE-TP, Dr. Michael Carriger, joined CMU’s 7th Annual Teaching & Learning Summit to present his experience with ungrading, an educational approach that challenges traditional grading systems and focuses on alternative methods of assessment and feedback. The event provided opportunities for colleagues across CMU to share and learn about new instructional strategies and technologies.

In Carriger’s poster session and presentation, he described how in a freshman writing seminar, he implemented ungrading by providing extensive feedback on progressively more complex writing assignments rather than grades. At the end of the semester, students compiled their writing assignments into a portfolio and presented the portfolio, including making a case for the grade they believed they had earned. The presentation finished with strategies to implement ungrading in other classrooms.

At the Center for Executive Education in Technology Policy, we aim to include a highly multidisciplinary approach to education and use a variety of different approaches to learning to support all individual's preferred styles of learning.
