A homeowner replaces his lights with fluorescent bulbs and buys energy-efficient appliances. The results are noticeably impressive on his electric bill. Magnify those efforts at Carnegie Mellon, which purchases 75 percent of its energy from renewable sources—that's the equivalent of 8,000 homes.
