Undergraduate students in the Mellon College of Science will be awarded MCS Research Honors at
graduation if they have met one of the following requirements.
For students who entered prior to Fall 2004:
- Successfully completed a departmental honors program
OR
- Earn a cumulative QPA of 3.2 or greater and carry out significant, successful research
This will be indicated by nomination by the student's research advisor or academic advisor (with endorsement by the
research advisor), plus completion of one of the following:
- Authoring or co-authoring an article in a refereed journal that is in print or that has been
submitted for publication.
- Presenting work at an organized and public research symposium or national/regional meeting,
such as the
Sigma Xi
poster competition at Carnegie Mellon's annual
research symposium.
(Presentations at group research meetings or undergraduate departmental seminars will not satisfy
this requirement.)
For students who entered in Fall 2004 or later:
- Successfully completed the Honors BS/MS program in the Chemistry or Mathematical Sciences
Department.
OR
- Successfully completed the departmental honors program in Biological Sciences or Chemistry and
presented an oral summary at the year-end departmental research symposium or faculty panel.
OR
- Earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher and carried out significant research.
Typically, this would consist of an academic project carried out during two semesters in the senior
year. However, a single project that spans a summer and a semester or that the research mentor deems
to be significant and sustained, even if the student worked for pay rather credit, will be allowed.
In addition the following must be completed:
- In the last semester of their senior year, students will register for 38-455 MCS Honors
Research, 6 units. To register for this course, students need to complete the
MCS Research Honors Thesis Form.
In this course, the student will write a 15 - 30 page thesis that must be approved by the
research advisor.
- Presentation of an oral summary of the research before a faculty panel.
Final approval of nominations for MCS research honors will come from the Dean of MCS and the Associate Dean for
Undergraduate Affairs.
