Chris Schroeder on community service.
Hi, my name is Chris, my major is physics, and one of my pursuits in life is doing what I can to help people in my community. There are many places to do community service around Carnegie Mellon, on and off campus, and you can go to any of these by yourself (call first). What I really like is to do service with one of the many student groups at Carnegie Mellon. With Circle K and Alpha Phi Omega, I have gone to about 30 different places in Pittsburgh to do all kinds of community service, including walking dogs for the Animal Rescue League, playing with the kids at the Holy Family Institute, and building and maintaining playgrounds. This is great because I have not only done a lot of service, but I have also met all sorts of nice people, including other students, and have been able to get some organizational and leadership experience.
Presently, I am trying to get a bboard running that will let students and service groups connect via one source. Besides Circle K and APhiO, there are NSCS, Mortarboard, and a number of groups at the University of Pittsburgh, just two blocks away. I am really hoping that soon people will be able to check assoc.service.calendar, see all of the different service opportunities and find ones that work with their schedules and sound interesting to them. I am hoping to help more people volunteer, and to help clubs get more people involved.
