Nathan Healy Receives Steinberg Award
Since 2007, Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of English has recognized a third semester Master’s in Professional Writing (MAPW) student with the Erwin R. Steinberg MAPW Scholarship. This year’s recipient is Nathan Healy.
The award recognizes a student who has excelled in the program’s style course and exemplifies integrity, intellectual curiosity and citizenship—values that characterized Steinberg’s legacy in scholarship, teaching and administration.
Steinberg founded the department’s Professional and Technical Writing Programs and for many years taught the required Style course for MAPW students.
“To be recognized by the faculty and staff of the MAPW program is an extreme honor,” said Healy. “To be recognized not only for academic success, but also integrity, intellectual curiosity, and citizenship is wonderful. The strength and skill of the faculty with whom I have worked, both in and out of the classroom, has been phenomenal. To receive this honor from that group is humbling.”
John Oddo, associate professor of English said Healy is a pleasure to teach and a worthy recipient of the award.
“Nate Healy is not only a sharp thinker and terrific writer, but a kind and thoughtful person. He can elucidate difficult writing, and brighten your day with a polite word,”
said Oddo.
Healy is spending the summer at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, New York and working for The Chautauquan Daily, covering members of the Young Artist Program, students studying and performing with the Opera Company for the summer.
Opportunities such as this and the Steinberg Award contributed to Healy’s decision to attend CMU for English.
“The MAPW program was exactly what I was looking for in a program,” Healy said. "The breadth of the program and the opportunities it opens up is ideal for anyone interested in any type of writing as a career. The core courses of the program, including Style, establish such a strong foundation that I feel prepared to succeed professionally in any type of writing career in which I might find myself. “
He continued, “I would like to extend special thanks to Dr. John Oddo, Dr. Necia Werner, Dr. Linda Flower, and Tom O’Boyle for their instruction, guidance, support, and care in helping me grow as a student, a man, and a citizen.”
