LaunchCMU To Showcase Startups, Research and Innovations from Carnegie Mellon and its Alumni
Biannual Event Celebrates Entrepreneurship Community at CMUCarnegie Mellon University's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship will host LaunchCMU, a daylong event showcasing cutting-edge research and innovations from Carnegie Mellon University students, alumni, faculty and staff.
The event, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, in the University Center, brings together CMU innovators, community development stakeholders and leaders in the venture capital community. The schedule of events includes an entrepreneurship demo, showcase presentations and insights from recent startup companies.
Participants will have the opportunity to tour the Field Robotics Center, CREATE Lab or NavLab and to attend an entrepreneurship demo at the University Center, which will feature emerging technologies, products and services, including ones from the Olympus PROBES, Swartz Fellows, the Open Field Entrepreneurs Fund, Traffic 21/UTC, Quality of Life Technology Center, Innovation Works and the Disruptive Health Technology Institute.
Alumnus and CMU Trustee Bruce McWilliams, chairman of the Research and Technology Commercialization Committee of CMU’s Board of Trustees, and president and chief executive officer of SuVolta Inc., will kick off the showcase presentations at 2 p.m., followed by remarks from CMU President Subra Suresh on the university’s landmark year for startup creation. Congressman Mike Doyle (D-Pa.) will join the president in highlighting the university’s success via a live webcast from Washington, D.C.
Key research presentations will include the following faculty and topics:
- Mor Harchol-Balter, associate professor of computer science — “Dynamic Power Management in Data Center”;
- Jonathan Cagan, the George Tallman and Florence Barrett Ladd Professor in Engineering — “Modeling Consumer Emotion”;
- Raj Rajkumar, the George Westinghouse Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering — “What Happens When Vehicles Drive Themselves?”;
- Aarti Singh, assistant professor of machine learning — “Unleashing the Potential of Modern Neuroimaging”;
- Russell Schwartz, professor of biological sciences and computational biology — “Reconstructing Evolution of Tumor Cells by Computer Algorithms”;
- Tuomas Sandholm, professor of computer science — “Modern Dynamic Kidney Exchanges”
