What We Do-Academic Development - Carnegie Mellon University

Mission Statement

Academic Development is the place to go for help with your academic work. Our services are designed to help both students who are having academic difficulties and those who just want to improve their performance. We offer everything from academic counseling in study skills to peer tutoring; as well as supplemental instruction and EXCEL collaborative learning groups for select courses.

Our mission is to assist students in developing the skills, strategies, and behaviors needed to perform as confident, independent, and active learners.

Academic Support Services

  • Academic Counseling
Academic Counseling is a student assistance program that helps students acquire more effective and efficient study skills. Both group workshops and individual appointments are available.
  • Peer Tutoring
We offer subject-specific tutoring geared primarily (but not exclusively) towards large introductory courses. Both walk-in tutoring and standing tutoring appointments are available.
  • Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic enrichment program that is offered in traditionally difficult courses. Designed to supplement -- not replace -- class lectures and recitations, SI sessions are interactive and collaborative.
  • EXCEL Collaborative Learning Groups
EXCEL groups meet once weekly throughout the semester. They are comprised of a maximum of six students per group and a trained EXCEL group leader who facilitates collaborative learning. EXCEL groups are formed on an as-needed-basis for the course which they support. There are often multiple groups for any given course.
