Annual Meeting of the New Champions

In its eighth year, 1,600 participants from 90 countries gathered for the 2014 Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Tianjin, China. The theme, "Creating Value Through Innovation," inspired discussions on shaping a better future with innovation. Four Carnegie Mellon University faculty members provided their perspectives on this theme during their IdeasLab session entitled "Data Science in Action."

From leading discussions on the future of human learning, the advancing robot revolution and the global outlook on science, to moderating a panel on advanced manufacturing, Carnegie Mellon University had a robust presence at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the Forum. Under the theme, "The Reshaping of the World: Consequence for Society, Politics and Business," delegates from the School of Computer Science were invited to participate in the IdeasLab session titled, "Unlocking the Potential of Human Learning."

Annual Meeting of the New Champions

In its seventh year, the Annual Meeting of the New Champions met in Dalian, China, under the theme "Meeting the Innovation Imperative." President Subra Suresh, along with two professors and eight alumni, attended the meeting. Suresh participated in four sessions on topics ranging from the "Future of Universities" to "Fostering Innovation-Driven Entrepreneurship." Erica Fuchs joined the 2013 class of Young Scientists, an honor that recognizes scientists under the age of 40 for their leadership and contribution to advancing the frontiers of science, engineering or technology in areas of high social impact.

World Economic Forum on Africa

The 23rd World Economic Forum on Africa brought together over 1,000 regional and global leaders from over 80 countries to discuss the theme "Delivering on Africa's Promise." Sessions focused on finding solutions to the economic, social and soft infrastructure gaps that limit economic growth and sustainable development. Dr. Jendayi Frazer, a Distinguished Public Professor at Dietrich and Heinz, led a panel discussion on "Mapping the African Growth Landscape," which examined which sectors and industries hold the most promise for growth and diversification in the next decade.

President Emeritus Jared L. Cohon and three CMU professors attended the 2013 Annual Meeting under the theme "Resilient Dynamism." Cohon participated in a panel discussion titled "The Disruptive University," which considered how new models of collaboration with and among universities are spurring innovation.
Justine Cassell, from the School of Computer Science, took part in panel discussions titled "STEM + ART = STEAM," "Man versus Machine" and "Shared History."

More than 2,000 participants came from 86 countries to take part in the 2012 Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Tianjin, China. Under the theme "Creating the Future Economy," CMU professors participated in sessions ranging from "Smart Art" to "The Future of Education." Four CMU professors took part in the PechaKucha style IdeasLab session titled "Computing & Technology: A Springboard for the Human Mind."

During CMU's inaugural attendence at the World Economic Forum, President Emeritus Jared L. Cohon, attended and moderated a group session at the annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. The 2011 Annual Meeting theme was "Mastering Quality Growth." Carnegie Mellon was also invited to present an IdeasLab session entitled "Disruptive Health Technologies" and a separate “BetaZone” session on the future of robotics in health care, education and social interaction.
