Creative Reuse: Brownfield Redevelopment in Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is well known for its successful revitalization of
former industrial sites. Delegates visited five brownfield sites
developed during the past decade or currently under development.
Downtown Walking Tour: Architectural Landmarks and Urban Spaces
Delegates
visited the architectural landmarks and urban spaces in Pittsburgh's
Golden Triangle, including masterpiece buildings by H. H. Richardson and
Daniel Burnham.
Neighborhoods in Transition: The Penn Avenue Corridor
Delegates visited four neighborhoods in the East End of
Pittsburgh that, taken together, provided a unique look at the current
spectrum of neighborhood redevelopment and regeneration in Pittsburgh.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Made in Pittsburgh
Major research universities and medical centers drive
Pittsburgh’s innovation and technology along with the remnant companies
of its industrial past. Delegates toured sites where world-class,
cutting-edge research and development is taking place.
Industrial Legacy: The Rivers of Steel Heritage Tour
Pittsburgh has been designated a national industrial heritage
area by the National Park Service. Delegates visited historic
industrial sites and mill towns from the Big Steel era of Pittsburgh.
Meet the Three Rivers: Riverfront Transformation and Green Buildings Tour
Delegates boarded RiverQuest, the world's first "green"
passenger boat, to learn about the history of Pittsburgh’s riverfronts
and the current state of river habitat, and to view riverfront
restoration projects, trails, parks, and green buildings.
