Politifact Fact-Checks Smart Cities with Metro21

Politifact recently reached out to Metro21 Executive Director Karen Lightman for clarification and guidance on the term "smart cities" and their role in the U.N. Agenda 2030 to set the record straight.

A recent Instagram post spawned various claims about smart cities that Ms. Lightman's experience and expertise were able to easily debunk and provide a clear and concise definition.

"Some think it’s all about the tech, some think it’s about the people," Lightman said. "I like to look at it more holistically — it's about the community and people and addressing their challenges and problems through collaborative applications of technology, while ensuring that there are policies in place to protect privacy and security — with the overall goal of improving quality of life, equitably and inclusively."
