CMU Hosts Inaugural Flagship Sustainability Talks

The U.N. General Assembly unanimously adopted 17 Global Goals in 2015 following recommendations from millions of people — especially young people — around the world. These 17 goals focus on wide-ranging issues, including reducing violence, promoting equitable education, fighting inequality and injustice and preventing the harmful effects of climate change by 2030. 

Carnegie Mellon hopes to achieve many of these goals in the university context in the coming years. To do so, this online event builds off work from the Brookings Institution and The Rockefeller Foundation. The global flagship 17 Rooms meeting took place in 2018 in New York City. Participants can sign up for a one-hour moderated discussion with CMU students, faculty, and staff that will take place from May 2 through May 15. 

The global pandemic, COVID-19, has exposed many cracks and crevices in our communities that need immediate attention and thoughtful solutions. While this pandemic has altered our lives in many ways, it has fast-tracked the need for sustainable development. Discussions around healthcare disparities, racial inequity, and climate change are top of mind. We need to hear about both strategic and tactical responses. You can help us surface these.

Executive Director Karen Lightman of Metro21 will be discussing one of the sustainability talks, focusing on Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities on May 7 from 4:30pm-5:30pm EST.
