Metro21, International Dark-Sky Association host Dark Skies Conference

Metro21 partnered with the Pittsburgh chapter of the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) on June 1 for a conference on the importance of keeping light pollution to a minimum. The program featured academic and medical researchers, community organizers and advocates, and city staff with a vested interest in light-sensitive infrastructure. Speakers led discussions on the disruption of light to the nighttime ecosystem, safety issues, impacts to astronomical research, and the human brain and body with artificial light. Attendees were invited to join the International Dark-Sky Association to continue to advocate for community development with a focus on ensuring lower instances of light pollution and ecosystem disruption. In all, the community walked away with tools for getting more involved locally, including city-level advocacy and neighborhood education projects with partners.
