Pittsburgh Airport Innovation Campus (PAIC) Announcement

On December 6, 2018, the Allegheny County Airport Authority broke ground on the Pittsburgh Airport Innovation Campus (PAIC), a new mixed-use campus near the Pittsburgh International Airport. Among the local business and civic leaders present were CMU’s Chief of Staff and Vice President for Strategic Initiatives, Daryl Weinert, as well as Mobility21’s Program Manager, Lisa Kay Schweyer.

The PAIC is a 195-acre plot intended for office and industrial use as well as entertainment and restaurant space. It is designated as a foreign-trade zone, which could help attract foreign companies to the area. The new campus would also jumpstart commercial and individual traffic through the airport, which will begin construction on a new terminal in 2019. Construction on the first PAIC building is slated to begin in 2020 or 2021.

The PAIC is part of a broader initiative by the airport authority to develop the Pittsburgh International Airport into the world’s smartest airport. In mid-April, they signed a memorandum of understanding with CMU to accomplish this goal by integrating more smart technology in the airport. Metro21: Smart Cities Institute will lead this work, deploying cutting-edge technologies to improve service and accessibility both in existing areas of the airport and the new terminal.
