Volunteering & Service Opportunities
Providing service to those in need is now more important than ever and is viewed by many health professions schools as a critical component of an applicant's life experiences.
Volunteering
Volunteering can be a great way to explore and confirm your interest in health professions, to strengthen your application package, and to have a positive impact on people's lives. With the many prestigious hospitals and medical centers here in Pittsburgh, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get involved.

Service
Many students have developed interest in longer term service commitments to broaden and increase their impact on communities in need. They work in different areas of the country on various projects, related or unrelated to health care. In addition to the major impact to the communites you serve, these opportunities are providing meangingful growth and professional experience that strengthen your application to graduate school. To learn more about year long service opportunities, see the following links:
AmeriCorps: AmeriCorps engages more than 75,000 Americans in intensive service each year at nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community and faith-based groups across the country.
HealthCorps: HealthCorps vision is to lead a nationwide movement toward a new generation of healthy young people. Our mission is to implement an innovative in-school model that inspires teens to make healthier choices for themselves and their families.
Teach for America: Teach For America is growing the movement of leaders who work to ensure that kids growing up in poverty get an excellent education.
NGS Movement: The Next Generation of Service mission is to empower young people to chart professional lives that work toward the betterment of humanity. We connect young people to social change organizations by offering vocational mentorship and promoting community and international service as a component of any career path. This program was founded by a CMU alumna!
