Connecting to Wifi @ CMU and HOME

Connecting to Home WiFi

To connect your Meta Quest headset to your home WiFi, follow these steps:

  • 1. Click the WiFi symbol to the right of your profile picture in the menu.
  • 2. Type your WiFi name and password to establish the connection.

Connecting to the CMU Device Network

Connecting to CMU requires quite a few steps; however, your device should already be set up. The following directions are only if you get disconnected.

Quest 3 headsets do not support the security protocol used by CMU Secure. The device shows a MAC address alias instead of the real MAC. Follow the steps below to register the headset on CMU’s Wi-Fi as a CMU Device.

1) Find the real MAC address

  1. On the headset: Settings → System → About (scroll if needed).
  2. Write down the MAC address shown on the About screen for the next step.
Note: A MAC address has six pairs of digits/letters, separated by colons, e.g. aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff.

2) Add the headset to the CMU Device network

  1. On your computer, go to https://getonline.cmu.edu/.
  2. Click Connect to CMU Device.
  3. Enter a hostname for the headset that includes its number (e.g., XRdemo#; check the storage case).
  4. Enter the MAC address (type two characters for each set).
  5. From the dropdown, choose the departmental device as Heinz College or Personal Device (if Heinz College isn’t listed).

3) Finalize

  1. Restart the headset and connect to the CMU DEVICE network.
  2. (Recommended) Set the device to connect automatically.
  3. Have the device “forget” any other school networks so it doesn’t connect to them by mistake.
